About Us
the heart of Ocean Sailing Charters
Neil van Deventer has always been drawn to the water. From his earliest days sailing, the ocean was not just a backdrop to life — it became his pulse, a source of solace, curiosity and connection. Though he initially followed a conventional path into the corporate world, studying stock broking and embracing the typical 9-to-5 lifestyle, Neil soon realised that his heart belonged elsewhere. The sea kept calling, and eventually, he no longer questioned why — he simply listened.
A defining moment in his life came with the birth of his daughter, Bella — his greatest joy and inspiration. Her arrival inspired a sense of purpose that reshaped his direction entirely. He brought his family home to the coast, left the rat race behind, and embarked on a new life doing what he loves most. What began with renting a single commercial vessel and operating as a one-man crew quickly evolved into something far greater — a passionate pursuit of creating exceptional sailing experiences.
That evolution led to the birth of LaraBella, his 55-foot flagship catamaran, followed by Bella Luna and the stylish lagoon cruiser Bella Vita — each named with love and carrying a bit of Bella’s spirit on every voyage. Under Neil’s leadership, Ocean Sailing Charters has grown into a family-owned business with a reputation for warmth, professionalism and unforgettable maritime experiences.
Neil’s approach to life and leadership is as gentle as it is intentional. He moves through the world with quiet passion — a deep respect for nature, an unwavering commitment to conservation, and a belief that the ocean teaches us something profound about stillness, resilience, and presence.
As a skipper, Neil is calm, capable and deeply attuned to the rhythms of the coastline and open sea. He loves sharing his knowledge — not just of sailing, but of the natural world that unfolds on every cruise. Whether guiding a scenic eco sail, a private charter, or a sunset escape, he leads with curiosity, humility and a genuine joy for each moment.
Today, Neil divides his time between land and sea with thoughtful balance, anchored by family and driven by a belief that life’s richest experiences unfold when we follow our true north. His philosophy – Sail fast, live slow – continues to bring him exquisite happiness, from the most soulful vantage point one could ever ask for – the water.
